Depending upon just how slang-riddled a particular post is, it can
sometimes be rather difficult for newcomers to understand just what
is going on. This page is an attempt at helping explain the most
common pieces of slang used in the context of Anonymous and Project
Chanology.
Firstly, there are two primary branches of slang that are used:
chanspeak, which has its origins in websites like 4chan; and
scispeak, which is the deliberately complex, obfuscated, and
generally opaque jargon used by the Church of Scientology.
Chanspeak
The single most obvious thing about chanspeak is that it is
offensive. This is deliberate. There are three plausible courses of
action for an individual to take upon first encountering chanspeak:
1) freaking out, usually angrily and/or noisily; 2) getting over it
or ignoring it; and 3) realizing that you actually find it bloody
hilarious. I would strongly advise you select option 2 or 3; feel
free to take option 1 if you want too, but if you whine about
people swearing here you will most likely be banned. There are more
important things to do than protect your precious ego.
Now that that's over with, on to some actual detail.
Likely the first piece of chanspeak you will run into is the
ubiquitous "fag". Unsurprisingly (this is slang, after all), this
word does not have the meanings it is normally associated with in
society at large. Rather, it is almost always used as a synonym for
"person". Much as "man" is used as a suffix in words like "mailman"
or "alderman", "fag" is found in compounds such as "newfag"
(someone who is new to the site or the culture), "Amerifag" (an
American), and so on.
After that come the memes: behold, in all their glory, or lack
thereof, things like
the Rickroll,
Caturday,
IMMA CHARGIN MAH
LAZOR, and
OVER NINE
THOUSAND. Given enough exposure to these, you too will begin to
find them amusing, despite a lack of any good reason for them to be
funny. You have my condolences.
Scispeak
Protip: If it's an acronym you don't recognize, there's a good
chance it's moonbat Scispeak. A few of the more commonly used ones
are CoS (Church of Scientology, of course), OSA (Office of Special
Affairs, the intelligence branch of the CoS), and OT (Operating
Thetan. What you get when you've dumped enough cash into the whole
thing to level up, so to speak). If you run across any others, you
should be safe asking whoever posted it what it stands for.
